Located in south-western Uganda, the Kibale National Park is one of only a few blocks of tropical forest remaining in the country. It harbours the greatest variety and concentration of primates found anywhere in East Africa, particularly chimpansees.
However, despite their ecological values, the deforestation and historic consumptive use of the Park, associated with exploitation of soil, forest product resources, coffee and timber has contributed to significant deterioration in the condition of Kibale's matural forest and its biodiversity over the past 30 years. In Kibale National Park, we support a reforestation project through our partner Face the Future to protect biodiversity, increase carbon reservoirs and sustain vital ecological functions.
The project specific objectives includes:
- To sequester carbon dioxide(CO2) to mitigate the effects of greenhouse gases.
- Restore the integrity of the degraded forest ecosystems and thereby enhance biodiversity conservation.
- Provide employment opportunities to the communities adjacent to the park.
- Impart forest skills and knowledge to the local communities.
