The climate problem is not going to go away, but we can all do our part to help minimize the effects of climate change. We have to; we need to keep the world liveable for future generations. This need is recognized by more and more organizations, but how can you help your sustainable aspirations to become real? And how do you integrate your sustainability in your organization and let it work for you?
More sustainable in terms of CSR means being focused on the P from Planet – luckily the structural polices developed to help that P also help the other two, People and Profit.
What are sustainability drivers? How can you develop a positive business case with actual value for your sustainability initiatives and make sure that it is firmly rooted in your organization?
Complying – Desiring – Renewing – Earning
Make sustainability tangible. Where are you now and where are you going? Set your goals and get to work. CNG advises many companies during that process and supports them in taking their first steps. CNG also helps companies that are already sustainable go further. There are four drivers that can play a role in an organization becoming structurally more sustainable or even climate neutral. These drivers appeal deeply and widely to business:
- Complying is becoming increasingly important. It is already relevant given current legislation and will become more important in the future as impact on the climate is given a price tag. A company may have made the choice to be transparent to its stakeholders about its impact and measures taken or there may be shareholders who are demanding this be done. Integrated reporting and reporting according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is also becoming more common.
- Desiring stands for intrinsic motivation, wanting to contribute to caring for our planet to keep it liveable for everyone. Desiring to do something out of conviction makes change easier and gets employees on board. A passionate leader who embodies sustainability can certainly give a company wings.
- Renewing is a sustainability driver that inspires new products, services, propositions and other new opportunities. If you start working on becoming more sustainable you can give the innovative power of a company an enormous boost! But renewing can also become very necessary due to an expected scarcity of resources or a ban on certain materials.
- Earning is essential for giving a company and its employees future continuity. A good policy that helps the P from Planet has been proven to contribute to profits and continuity. Conversely, a profit based business model is more and more often the starting point for sustainability.
